Paintings by Amanda Gullixson
January 7 - February 28
About the Artist:
I have always been fascinated with the art and popular culture of decades past, and I have incorporated this into my career as a painter. I create acrylic and mixed-media paintings using the bright colors, clean lines, and kitschy feel of 1950s and ‘60s furnishings, fabrics, advertisements and art. I am currently working on two series of these retro paintings- the Pattern Pieces, and the Ad Series.
The Pattern Pieces focus on color and design, and are heavily influenced by the patterns and color schemes made popular by ‘50s and ‘60s clothing, textiles, and household goods. By creating these patterns on canvas on a larger scale than you would normally find on these everyday objects, it elevates their status from product design to high art. My goal is that the viewer becomes more aware of the beauty that can be found in the things that are around us every day.
The Ad Series is influenced by ad art from the ‘50s and ‘60s, and combines social commentary with retro art. The series focuses on different aspects of the art profession from the perspective of the artist. The pieces shown here focus specifically on issues such as the lack of affordable housing, lack of affordable medical care, and stereotypes placed on artists from outsiders, institutions, and even other artists themselves.
Amanda's studio is located in the Emy Frentz Arts Guild.
